Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited political action thriller Jana Nayagan, touted as his final film before entering politics with TVK, has been officially postponed. The announcement was made by KVN Productions after the film failed to receive CBFC certification on time, forcing the makers to approach the Madras High Court. The court hearing is scheduled for January 9, which was also the film’s planned release date.
Jana Nayagan Creates Massive Buzz Ahead of Release
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Thalapathy Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol. Even before its release, the film created history at the global box office. With Vijay’s unmatched fan following, the movie witnessed extraordinary advance bookings across India and overseas markets, pointing toward a massive opening.
Trade sources reveal that Jana Nayagan recorded over ₹50 crore in worldwide advance bookings, making it one of the biggest pre-release successes in Tamil cinema.
Record-Breaking Advance Booking Numbers
The pre-release performance of Jana Nayagan has been phenomenal across key markets:
- Worldwide Advance Gross: ₹50 crore+
- Malaysia: RM 2.1 million (90,000+ tickets sold)
- Kerala: ₹2.36 crore
- India Tickets Sold: 2.02 lakh+
- All-India Day 1 Advance (excluding blocked seats): ₹5.86 crore
- Including blocked seats: ₹8.73 crore
- Average Ticket Price (ATP): ₹217
These numbers clearly highlight the massive demand for Vijay’s swan song.
Overseas Market Dominance
In overseas territories alone, Jana Nayagan had already clocked $3.6 million in advance bookings, with multiple shows selling out days before release. This further cemented Vijay’s global stardom and the film’s blockbuster potential.
Heartbroken 💔 @actorvijay Anna.. as a brother I’m standing with you as one among the millions of brothers beside you. You don’t need a date.. you are the opening. Whenever that date is.. Pongal only starts then. #istandwithvijayanna pic.twitter.com/ccFy6iK4qM

Censor Trouble Leads to Postponement
Despite the overwhelming buzz, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) did not issue the clearance even with just one day remaining for release. Left with no option, the makers moved the Madras High Court. The court has reserved its verdict, which is expected to be announced on January 9.
Until then, the theatrical release of Jana Nayagan remains on hold.
Impact on Box Office Landscape
With Jana Nayagan postponed, Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi stands to gain momentum at the box office. Interestingly, Parasakthi is also facing a censor delay but has already made headlines by setting a new record for the most-watched Tamil trailer in the first 24 hours, surpassing Jana Nayagan’s earlier record.
